Ireland's First Shopping Centre to Offer Free Period Care

Overview

In July 2026, Blackrock Village Centre partnered with Riley to become the first shopping centre in Ireland to provide free, sustainable period products in every customer and staff bathroom across the centre.

It's not a trial or a one-off gesture, the products are now a permanent fixture, available on an ongoing basis to the more than three million people who visit the centre each year, as well as the staff of its 30+ retailers.

One of the most common concerns venues raise before switching to free period care is usage: will demand spike, and will it be misused? Niamh Grist, Centre Manager at Blackrock Village Centre, answers that directly from experience.

When we first considering introducing free period products, I'll admit I was a little nervous. My biggest concern was that people would misuse the products. As a Centre Manager, managing budgets is always a priority, so it was something I gave a lot of thought to. Thankfully, those concerns never became a reality. After an initial surge in demand, usage has quickly settled, and people are now simply taking what they need. It's been so lovely to see how positively our customers have responded."

By making free products available throughout the centre, Blackrock Village Centre is removing a practical barrier, reducing stigma, and setting a new standard for what an inclusive public space looks like.
